Ógra Shinn Féin in Derry held a protest on Saturday outside Strand Road PSNI Station over the introduction of Taser Guns. Representatives from West Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin and Magee Ógra Shinn Féin also were in attendance. Ógra members handed out leaflets and engaged with members of the public throughout the duration of the protest.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Niall Doran stated,

“The introduction of Tasers into the PSNI armoury without the support of the Policing Board and without the results of an Equality Impact Assessment contravenes the Patton Report principle of communities having a say in policing. The ability of these weapons to cause death is well documented and they cannot be allowed to be used indiscriminately."

“Even though we are being told that these weapons will only be used as an alternative to live rounds and as a weapon of protection, last week on a BBC Fly on the Wall documentary, Welsh Police used a Taser Gun on a man as an offensive tactic. The man was standing in the street when a police officer approached him and used a Taser, It was later confirmed that the man was totally innocent.

“This type of abuse gets introduced when the public do not take a stand and Ógra Shinn Féin are determined to highlight the issue so that it remains on the agenda of the Policing Board and that the Chief Constable withdraws the weapon from general use."

why are ogra wasting their time protesting about tazers? the police are certainly not going to listen to a handful of protestors, when they ignore the dpp and pbs.

do osf not see that if the bodies, that they fully endorsed, dont have power to stop the CC of the PSNI/RUC issuing tazers, then their colourful and well meaning protest wont do the job either.

but sure then it gives osf something do to

RE,

You spend far too much time being critical of others that are truly trying to force change, tell me, is this a bit more of your humour? What have you done to help make change other than sit on this forum and criticise everyone else?

Would you criticise the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, the Irish Republican Socialist Party, Republican Sinn Féin or éirígí if they protested to stop the RUC/PSNI from using tazers? You don't have to agree with Sinn Féin's policies, but that doesn't mean that you have to criticise everything that they do either.

I'd have thought it had more to do with the process of 'normalisation' myself but if it makes you feel better thinking ogra played some roll in it then thats ok too I suppose.

Now can ya's head up to the bases still here and the MI5 HQ's quick smart and get them shifted too.

Fair question. No one should be criticised for taking any actions which flag up British injustice in Ireland.
