éirígí steps up campaign against the Treaty

24/05/08

In recent days éirígí has continued to support events and campaigns against the proposed Lisbon Treaty across Ireland.

On Tuesday, May 21, éirígí spokesperson Daithí Mac an Mháistír contributed to a Q&A session with journalists at the formal launch of the Campaign Against the EU Constitution (CAEUC) which was held at the Unite-TGWU offices in Dublin before travelling to Donegal to promote éirígí’s Vote No to Lisbon campaign.

The CAEUC, of which éirígí is a member, is campaigning for a no vote in the June 12 Twenty-Six county referendum. It is a broad coalition of political parties, organizations, trade unionists and individuals committed to democracy, peace, justice, Irish neutrality and equality.

Speaking after the events Daithí said:

“As we move closer to the date of the referendum we have seen a heartening and much needed increase in campaigning activity against the Lisbon treaty. At the official launch of the CAEUC campaign it was encouraging to see such a wide range of progressive and left voices working on a coordinated campaign against the Treaty.

“The CAEUC launch covered some of the wide range of reasons to vote ‘No’ to the treaty from the erosion of workers rights to the loss of vetoes in areas including health and education, to militarisation and the removal of democratic accountability.

“Later the meeting in Donegal emphasised how these concerns are shared by people the length and breadth of Ireland.

“With the referendum only a few weeks away I would appeal to people to inform themselves of the true consequences of this Treaty and the real and lasting damage it will cause to Ireland.

“éirígí is committed to exposing the truth behind the Lisbon Treaty and will continue to work with all those who share our concerns in pursuit of a resounding No vote.

“We will be involved in further public events up until the day of the referendum and we encourage everyone to resist the implementation of this debilitating and disempowering piece of European legislation, by simply voting No on June 12.

“We also encourage people to organise in other ways through letter writing campaigns and within your unions and workplaces generally to encourage an awareness of the reality of this treaty, which the Irish and British governments are hiding from the citizens of this country.

“Furthermore people should lobby politicians, particularly in the Six Counties where there will be no referendum, as the British government will pass this legislation without consultation with the citizens of the northeast.

“The CAEUC will be involved in awareness raising in Belfast on the issue in the coming weeks and I encourage people to come along to the meeting we have organised for June 9th at 7pm in the Conway Mill, West Belfast to find out how it will affect the 1.8 million Irish citizens living under British Rule.”

All details of further events will be advertised on this site in advance. Keep logging on to find out more.

Please note the meeting in Belfast on June 9th. This is an area much neglected in the debate so far.

As Republicans éirígí and others are using 'Not without the north' and the denial of a voice to 1.8million Irish people as a key campaign theme. We and others are also trying to utilise support from within the 6 counties for the campaign.

I'm surprised this isn't obvious, SF will have some one on the platform at the Belfast meeting so clearly some in your party understand.

Its a very important point. In our Six Point Objection approach we highlighted the issue thus

Given that the dual referenda held in relation to the Good Friday Agreement was hailed by some as an act of self determination by the Irish people, and accepted as such by the EU, will the outcome of a referendum held within the Southern jurisdiction only be viewed as a diminution of Irish self determination? That a conflict of interpretation clearly exists within the EU as to what exactly constitutes an act of self determination by the Irish people the proposed Constitution should not be submitted for ratification to the Irish people up until such time as an act of self determination by the Irish people is clearly defined according to International Law.

They can't have it both ways. eirigi have picked up on this point and are to congratulated for it.

The people in Donegal have a vote and éirígí were more than willing to participate in debates on the Lisbon Treaty there.

The other northern counties will be affected by the Treaty and just because they can't vote doesn't mean they can't participate in the debate.
