View Full Version : Finding out about my grandad

My grandad was an English guy who joined the IRA around the time of the Easter Uprising, but it's been pretty difficult to find out more history about him. I've seen a photo of him standing with Michael Collins, both in what looked like officer's uniforms (shaking hands I think, though it's years since I saw the pic) and know he was arrested for subversion around 1920, with the suggestion he was involved with an explosion at Shillelagh train station, Wicklow, but that's about all I know.

If anyone can tell me where I could find out more about him or the Wicklow Brigade history I'd appreciate it. Maybe there's an archive of photos from the time which could help?

That's a bit tricky as it's my mother's maiden-name, and that's never a good thing to give out in public...

If you can point me in the right direction to someone who might know (net or not) that would be ideal.

They love getting back to people with that type of information. I would encourage people to spend time in their local libraries, especially in the local history section.

Church Records may help. I take your point about posting Names:redface:

You can look up his name in the Church registers if he got married; just find out where he was married and ask around.
Ya can also look in Church registers in England around where he was born. I'm sure you can find an e-mail or some contact details for differnt Churches, my parish has a website and it's not even that big...

well it's more about his IRA history that I'm interested in - I still have a fair load of family in the area, but they're not too keen on talking about it.

I emailed Wicklow County Library but they've obviously got more important things to do than give out information....
