Sean McCaughey: Sentenced to death for having detained and assaulted Stephen Hayes, ex-Chief-of-Staff of the IRA and a self-confessed informer, his sentence was commuted to life. After serving 5 years in Portlaoise in brutal and inhuman conditions, he started his strike on 19 April 1946. After 16 days, he stopped taking water and died on the 23rd day of his strike, 11 May 1946

In Portlaoise Jail Sean Mc Caughey has died;

So is ended his long night.

By hunger strike he fought and tried

To win for Ireland Liberty’s light.

For five long years in that place he had lain,

Waiting for the coming dawn;

His body burned and tortured with pain,

‘Til death gave Freedom to gentle Sean.

Oh Erin weep -- oh Erin cry --

Strike thy breast at his name.

A curse on those who let him die --

Cruel their hearts -- great is their shame.

In Aughnacloy and Belfast too,

Heavy hearts cry out for Sean –

O he is dead that loved Roisin Dubh,

But in our memory he shall live on.

In Milltown now our hero lies –

Flowers bloom around his grave;

O’er Divis hill the wild wind sighs –

For Sean who scorned to live a slave.

Aye, a brain tumour that he didn't get treatment for. That Doolin character is a bit suspect looking though. Heart attack caused by cocaine and they're putting him in the 'Roll OF Honour' hardly appropriate I'd say.

Volunteer Robert Doolin was a volunteer of Óglaigh na hÉireann. He may not have died whilst being on active service for them (Óglaigh na hÉireann,) but that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be remembered just as much as any other volunteer of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

I think its wrong to be saying that after all they are soldiers and soldiers usually end up with their nerves ****ed through the stress of war,killing people,seeing others killed,under constant surveilance by the security services everywere they go, the brits have fancy clinics to help their soldiers deal with war republicans don't, plenty of republicans have died at the bottom of a bottle and i'm sure a good few using druggs aswell.
Unless you have went through the horrors of war you dont know what that guy was living through, probably a nightmare. god bless him.

arty,

I agree with alittle of what you said but not all. War does collect victims after the battles over however this does not automaticly give anyone that fought the right to use the war as an excuse for future behavior. There is a fine line between right and wrong. They have the option to seek professional counseling to help them cope with things from the past. There is a group for these men and women if they feel uncomfortable going to a clinic/hospital. Former prisoners have organized a place for these men to go so they can seek help from people of liked minds. There is always a viable option, it is up to the individual to make a sound choice that may help to redirect their current path.

Just because someone was in the army does not give them an excuse to do as they please in this life.

This is rubbish.

Firstly, do you even know if this man met any horros due to his involvement.

Secondly, any persons right to be associated with a movement terminates upon doing anything which brings it into disrepute.

Yes some republicans have died as a result of drink problems, but if this man was on cocaine then please do not do these men a diservice by comparing them with him.

Some died lonely whilst combating alcoholism, this man seems to have died in a violent struggle with a security guard he had threatened to kill whilst off his head on a highly illegal and dangerous drug.

It seems to me that the sympathy he has been given here comes primarily from people outside of the jurisdiction who probably understand the horrors of war less than the one's condemning this man - here he'd find very little sympathy.

Correct Et.

Just read up a bit more on this guy, now arthyboy's sympathy is even more out of place.

The guy was an actor, far from the war zone and at 33 was hardly an old war horse.

I wouldn't put his name on a ny roll of honour and to do so is an insult to the others who gave their lives selflessly.

Ártybhoy. I think you are over-reacting, none of us know the circumstances of Doolin's RIRA activity. He may have fired rockets at the MI5 building or he may have sold coke to celebrities for them. We don't know the specifics; but, I would speculate that it was little worthy of honour or contributary to the cause of Irish freedom. Drugs affect all sections of society, IRA members using drugs would have been stood down immeadietly. How open to compromise would a militant activist caught in possession of cocaine be ffs? Putting this amadan on their roll of honour is indicative of the rotten nature of the RIRA.

Temper temper.

I understand fully what has happened here and have witnessed first hand, and am still witnessing first hand what toll the war has taken upon the combatants, their families, communities, etc.

I have also witnessed the ravaging of people and communities through drugs, hence why republicans were at the forefront of trying to rid our communities of the scourge of drugs and the filth that peddled them.

I'm not saying that anyone who has been a republican could not get caught up in illegal drugs, but it is both extremely rare and counter revolutionary.

I believe, and so would that vast vast majority of republicans here including former combatants, that anyone engaged in this type of behaviour has brough disgrace upon republicanism and should not be acknowledged never mind honoured.

People who have struggled and suffered do not wish to be associated with people who get coked up and go looking for people to beat with batons.

If you don't agree thats fine but take it from me, you are the minority mate not me.

No you are wrong. A roll of Honour is just that a Roll if HONOUR, and only those whom have served the cause with distinction qualify.

This man died after attacking taxi firm workers with a baton whilst coked up - he does not qualify for a Roll of Honour.

By your logic anyone who was a volunteer would qualify - how bout Denis Donaldson of maybe a rapist of child molester...

Once you bring a movement into disrepute you cannot be included on a Roll of Honour, thats simple.

The real question is why would people want to cheapen a roll of honour with the likes of this guy - put him on the same page as the Hunger Strikers for instance, I think not kid.

Great contribution there...I think not.

There is no need to defend the name of Vol. Joseph O'Connor from the Ignorant needless to say young man you have a lot of learning to do.

(There is a síneadh over the first O there is another síneadh over the e in Éireann so by the looks of things you need a wee spelling lesson before you qualify in the art of denegrating mens sacrifice and giving the martyrs spelling tests)

Fian James Francis McCaughey & Patrick Bernard

James or Jimmy to many of his friends, was born in Dungannon on December 18th 1962, and was the second son of Norbert and Molly McCaughey in a family of ten children, five boys and five girls. He grew up in woodburn Crescent in the towns republican Ballygawley road housing estate which had earned the nick name "the Pondarosea" named after the wild west ranch from the TV show Bonanza it got the name from its daily gun battles with the R.U.C and British Army.

It was with this backdrop at the hight of the War in the north between 1973 and his death in 1976 that Jimmy and his best friend Patrick Bernard joined and were active in na Fianna Eireann. Over the years Jimmy saw his family home raided on so many occasions and the brutality carried out on his parents, especially his father, with regular abusive language used by drunken R.U.C and British Army personnel. During one raid on the house at 4.00pm in the morning the R.U.C offerd the children sweets. Jimmy quickly showed his contempt for the R.U.C, squeezed them and threw them into the fire. One R.U.C member made the remark "you know who he learnt that from". By 1973 Jimmy and Patrick were active with the local Fianna which was well organised in the Dungannon area. As the year progressed, with all the raids and harassment of nationalists in the north, they became more active in the Republican movement. They were inseparable and deeply dedicated to what they were involved in. Jimmys father recalls "on many occasions they would return home late. very few in Dungannon knew what their role was and as the months passed we became aware that Jimmy and Patrick were more deeply involved than we knew". His remark on one particular night when he and Patrick came in at 1.30am, " i asked him where he was his only reply was all went well". At no time throughout the the period of Jimmy and Patricks young lives did they ever discuss anything that went on during their time helping the local Volunteers.
James Francis McCaughey and his friend and Comrade Patrick Bernard were killed along with two civilians Patrick Small and Joseph Kelly when loyalists detonated a car bomb outside the hillcrest bar in Dungannon, the two youths had been outside the bar when the bomb exploded James McCaughey died at the scene and his comrade Patrick Bernard died later in hospital. One week after the funeral, representatives of the Republican movement presented a tricolour and Beret to both families. Republican Sinn Fein in Dungannon were invited in 2002 to hold their easter commeration at the graveside of fian James McCaughey & Patrick Bernard and were proud to do so, now the commeration is a popular fixture in the local Republican calander. James McCaughey and Patrick Bernard are laid to rest side by side in death as they were in life in the Edendork graveyard not far from Dungannon Town
