Sinn Fein call for factory handover
By Staff reporter
Sinn Fein have called for Seagate to donate their Limavady plant to the community.
Derry MLA., Raymond McCartney says the firm should copy the example of Derry firm Molins, which, after closing in the 1980s, donated its plant to the city for private enterprise. The engineering firm also gifted £750,000 towards the establishment of Maydown Precision Engineering.
Mr. McCartney said his party would be pushing for a “coordinated” approach of government agencies to strengthen the North West’s economic prospects.
The Sinn Fein Assemblyman and fellow party MLA Martina Anderson met with the General Manager of Seagate’s Derry plant, John Spangler, this
week to discuss Seagate’s future in the North West following the closure of its Limavady facility.
“At the meeting we raised a number of issues including Mr. Spangler’s assertion that the Derry plant’s future is secured for the next three to four years, he said.“We discussed with him that this needed to be conveyed to the workforce and that he reasoned that steps had already been taken.
“We also outlined a number of suggestions which should feature in the consultation phase now taking place in relation to the proposed closure of the Limavady plant. These included the need for retraining, a fund being made available to assist this, the possibility of re-skilling workers to transfer to the Springtown plant. We also asked the company to give consideration to some form of a community renewal initiative. The company agreed that this is something which we could return to in the near future.”
