Republicans are planning to hold a commemoration in the city cemetery this weekend to mark the 29th anniversary of the death of local IRA volunteer Patsy Duffy.

The commemoration was announced in the latest edition of ‘Beir Bua,’ the newsletter produced by the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, which has been delivered to homes in a number of areas of the city this week.

Patsy Duffy was shot dead by the SAS as he checked on an IRA arms dump in a house on Maureen Avenue in November 1978. He was 50 years old.

The newsletter states: “On Sunday 25th November the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, in conjunction with the Duffy family, will be holding a commemoration to honour the memory of the late Patsy Duffy. Anyone wishing to take part in the commemoration is asked to assemble at 2pm sharp at the cemetery gate at Bligh’s Gardens, Creggan.”

The local cumann of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement is named after Patsy Duffy.

great commemoration and a great turnout, marian price delivered an excellent statement. Francie mackey was in attendance - the crowd was led by a colour party from the republican movement. Despite the weather conditions, true republicans turned out in great numbers to remember volunteer patsy duffy and the ultimate sacrifice that he made for us. RIP Comrade
