We Are Entitled To Honour Our Dead
27 Samhain/November 2007
The current trend in Irish politics towards glamorizing all things British and denigrating the struggle of the dead generations who fought for Irish freedom must be challenged and faced head on, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Fein said at a commemoration in Limerick today.
Des Long from Corbally in Limerick, the chairman of the Munster RSF Executive said that the whole move towards accepting British rule in Ireland must be opposed by all people who value Irish soverngnity and independence.
Speaking at a wreath laying ceremony at the Manchester Martyrs memorial in Mount St Lawrence cemetery he said that sacrifice ofmen like Allen, Larkin and O’Brien wouldnever be forgotten despite the best efforts of the Leinster House politicians and their new found friends in Stormont to crush the voices of those who continue to oppose the partition of Ireland. We are entitled to state that the border hasnot gone away you know.
We are entitled to say that the Queen of England should not visit Ireland – and if she does embark on a tour here then we are entitled to oppose it.In the current political climate of appeasing the British, has now become somewhat unfashionable for the public in general to honour our patriot dead. While the widespread wearing of the Poppy seems to have gained official sanction from the politicians in Leinster House, we must again state that Irishmen and Irish women are fully entitled to wear the Easter Lily and honour the 1916 Rising
