I wouldn't turn my back on the ol' git! Never will trust him, he's a necessary evil right now and SF will have to work with him until he makes his exit. Hopefully soon!

Don't trust him, don't like him, don't think he has the people's best interest's at heart. You can never really change who you are.

Paisley is your typical clerical charlatan, albeit one with blood on his hands.

Because we care more about the people than any tiff with Ian Paisley. We know the entire world is watching him so he can't make any big moves now unless he wants to cause a big scene. It's just something we have to accept.

Pretty much - but to be honest, the sooner his kind is gone from Northern politics, the sooner we can make some real progress.

True.. but I don't think anyone can be as bigoted as him. Even slight progress is still progress.

I have to say, I think his son is worse, but fortunately not as savvy nor as intelligent. I do not believe Ian2 will be the party's choice for successor.

Im sure the dup forums are asking the same about mcguinness but supporters of the current process on those forums could say at least mcguinness is number 2 in the double act.

for being my Dad's age Gerry is still quite a 'babe'.

Hmmm. My dad's name is also Jerry. Just spelled with a J instead of a G

I don't think it'll pan out as simply as that, the party won't back young Paisley as leader and his ego will refuse to accept it. I would forsee a split in the camp when the aul fella kicks the bucket, there is so much instability there as it is, a war to see who gets the top spot won't be pleasant for them.

Very true, you have the pragmatic camp and the fundamentalist camp; poor auld Paul Berry was ousted for being too camp. The likes of Donaldson, Robinson and Foster are the pragmatists, true-blue Unionists to the core but somewhat rational. The fundies are the likes of McCrae, Óg and Dodds and I could see a schism between the two factions. That being said the auld bastard probably eats stem cell yoghurts for breakfast, he could live to be 120.

i suppose so. had there been no assembly and a defferent political climate i think Robinson would have been the likely canditate but with the way things are now it could be a bit more problematic for the DUP to elect a leader.
Do you think their party is really split down the middle with the direction its going at the moment? or with pasiley gone would the party take a different approach to power sharing:hmmm:

I think Robinson will take over the DUP but agree there will be a massive split over it.

free presbyterians make up a very small percentage of the 6 county population, yet i head that half the dup representitives are members of that particualar cult/sect, imagine trying to lead them with pragmatism

i dont know how true it is,but a few lads i know from the 6 counties who are nationalist, told me that although paisley is a pox,he was supposed to be a good counciler and was fair even with nationalists who lived in his constituency, have any of the lads here from the north heard the same?

On a rescent visit by bertie ahern to ballymena. Paisley said that the visit was not just for ulster ( i m sure he was only refering to the occupied 6 counties) but for the island of Ireland. I know is a straw in the wind, but with engagement and persuation all things are possible when you are right.
