Barry McColgan, National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin has welcomed a call from SDLP Youth backing All Ireland Presidential Elections and urged other youth wings to join the campaign.

He said,

"In January 2004, Ógra Shinn Féin launched a campaign titled 'A President For All', which sought that Irish citizens in the 6 counties could vote in the Irish Presidential election."

"The campaign to date has seen protests and rallies across Ireland, thousands of leaflets being distributed, motions in support of the campaign where passed in numerous council chambers across Ireland and an online petition received thousands of signatures."

"It has been 10 years since the people of Ireland voted for the Good Friday Agreement, and 10 long years since the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said that he would look at how people in the North could participate in National political life. Yet 10 years on the Dublin government has done nothing to bring this about."

"It is good to see the SDLP Youth take this on as an issue. Broad based support for this campaign will assist further in its success, and I therefore would ask that other youth wings across Ireland support this important call for 'A President For All'."

A president "for all".... means exactly what? Anyone can be nominated? From any party or constituency? If anyone knows, please clarify. Thanks!

Cheers, Hildy

Thanks, a chara....I did read yer post. It still doesn't answer my questions. In otherwords, hypothetically...... could Gerry Adams be a candidate? And if elected, he would be president of both the north and the south?

It is not about who can stand, but the right of people in the 6 counties to vote in the election. As you may be aware the present President is from Belfast.

That's what I needed to know. Well, how does that benefit the 6 counties? I'm not trying to be negative, here....because every little step towards an 'all Ireland' anything is good. However, the president that the 6 help to elect has no governmental power there, so what's the point. I mean its a 'national patriotic' gesture I agree, but what other benefits are there?

The actions of the 26 effect the 6...as do Westminister's.
I think it would be a good idea if the rest of the world should vote in American presidental elections they insist on acting like some sort of world police...but that's off topic.

Hildy a chara,

An issue like All Ireland presidential Elections will pave the way for the first All Ireland Elections since 1918.

At current we have the crazy situation where the current 'President of Ireland' Mary McAleese, could not vote for herself from her home address in Rostrevor, County Down.

The All Ireland Agenda is about advancing, political and social affairs in Ireland on a truly national basis.

To achieve All Ireland Elections is a feat in itself, which would set a precedent for other All Ireland projects to follow.

And also this is very much a rights issue. Irish citizens should have a right to vote for their President.

what difference would a meaningless 32 county figurehead make in all honesty? as long as stormont and LH are up and running and there are british troops and secret police in our country it would make no difference at all

Well Gerry says NOT!

Adams rules out Irish Presidency bid
Breaking News (http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/mheygbidqlcw/rss2/)

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams today ruled himself out of the running for the Irish presidency.

Asked if he would consider taking over from Mary McAleese in 2012, Mr Adams said that he had no interest in the post.

“There is a life outside politics. No, under no circumstances,” he said.

There has been long running speculation Sinn Féin were gearing up for an ambitious plan to put Mr Adams forward for the presidency.

But in an interview with Dublin’s Newstalk Radio the Sinn Féin leader dismissed the suggestion and quipped that Aras an Uachtarain, the President’s imposing residence in Phoenix Park, offered no attraction.

"El commandante"? Are we in 1950's Argentina now or something? Not that that cap would fir on Gerry "I was NEVER in the IRA" Adams.

No but you must think we are in 1950's north of Ireland they way you carry on about another armed struggle! And who's to say IRP, someday you just may have Mrs. Adams as President, now wouldn't that be of best of all ironies!:icon_lol: And don't say its impossible, because its not!

Were does this leave us with reforming the state. Lets say, Gerry does become president, i always thought when SF take government in the south office of the President and the toisearch would either be combined or abolished. Does this mean that if SF get into government the structures in place will remain unchanged?

Garry ain't becoming president, it wouldn't even be up for consideration to run before reunification.

But even when reunification occurs I don't see why the offices of president and Taoiseach would be combined ? They serve two different roles.
