British war criminal not welcome

Statement by Kevin Devlin, Publicity Officer, Republican Sinn Féin

Speaking at the protest outside Easons book shop on O’Connell Street, Dublin on Saturday September 4, the National Assistant PRO for Republican Sinn Féin outlined the organisations opposition to a visit by Tony Blair to promote his new book.

Kevin Devlin said that “Republican Sinn Féin condemns unreservedly the visit to Dublin of the war criminal and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

“Given the continued occupation of six of our counties, a man who played a leading role in cementing British rule in Ireland can never be welcome here.

“His legacy of invasion, occupation and subjugation reaches from Ireland to Iraq to Afghanistan.

“But like the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, we refuse to be subjected to British rule. Blair is here to make money from a book, money which he intends to donate to the British Legion, an organisation that supports the British Military. That same British Military has 5,000 troops in Ireland who are here to protect British interests as they have always done.

“Meanwhile Republicans are harassed, imprisoned, and in the case of Martin Corey interned as a political hostage, all in the name of a crumbling Empire”.

He called on people not to buy the book, “Boycott the book: refuse to financially support the occupation forces”.

Tony Blair had to be escorted by a large force of the 26-County police to and from the book signing such was the opposition to his appearance in Dublin. Those who queued to buy the book were subjected to a full body search and had to pass through an airport-type scanner.

My cousin was murdered after the 1986 split by Pro-British forces because he was a volunteer - in the eyes of RSF was he a sell-out for sticking with the Provos?

For release
28ú Lúnasa/August 2010

Irish Republicans will not be purchased or intimidated

Speaking at the Hunger Strike commemoration in Bundoran Co Donegal on Saturday August 28th the President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton said:

“I have no prouder boast than to say I am Irish and have been privileged to fight for the Irish people and for Ireland. If I have a duty I will perform it to the full in the unshakable belief that we are a noble race and that chains and bonds have no part in us.” With these words addressed to the people of South Derry and surrounding areas Francis Hughes joined his comrade Bobby Sands on a Hunger Strike, which would end with his death after 59 days on May 12 1981.

There is much debate as to what is the legacy of the 1981 hunger strikers. We will not speculate as to what their position would be today – we leave that to others. We can only judge them on their words and actions during their lives. Let us not be accused of putting words in their mouths but rather let the men speak for themselves: In a statement on the commencement of the second hunger strike the POWs declared “We the republican POWs in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh, and our comrades in Armagh Prison, are entitled to and hereby demand political status, and we reject today as we have consistently rejected every day since September 14th, 1976, when the blanket protest began, the British government’s attempted criminalisation of ourselves and our struggle.”
The words of their leader Bobby Sands written in his diary as he embarked on his 65 day hunger for justice on March 1 1981: “I believe I am but another of those wretched Irishmen born of a risen generation with a deeply rooted and unquenchable desire for freedom. I am dying not just to attempt to end the barbarity of H-Block, or to gain the rightful recognition of a political prisoner, but primarily because what is lost in here is lost for the Republic and those wretched oppressed whom I am deeply proud to know as the ‘risen people”.

The heroism and prolonged sacrifice of the hunger strikers galvanised people in Ireland and throughout the world in support of the men and their cause. Bobby Sands like Kevin Barry for an earlier generation came to personify the struggle for Irish freedom.

The self-sacrifice, integrity and force of will displayed by these men are awe-inspiring and commands the respect of all who champion the cause of human freedom. With their bodies the only weapon available to them the men in Long Kesh and the women in Armagh jail pitted themselves against the forces of British imperialism and gave witness to the world that the Irish Nation was unconquered and unconquerable.

Today in Maghaberry prison the Republican prisoners have similarly resisted all attempts by the British Government and their puppet regime in Stormont to criminalise either them or the cause for which they suffer the loss of their liberty – Ireland’s right to national independence.

These men by their courage and determination in the face of the brutality of the British state have given the lie to those who claim that a line has been drawn under Irish history. That British rule and partition are now accepted and acceptable. The men in Maghaberry give testament to the lesson of Irish history. While England occupies Ireland there will always be a section of the Irish people to resist that occupation.

We salute the men in Maghaberry for their struggle and call now for the full implementation of the agreement secured by the Republican prisoners.

Westminster, Stormont and Leinster House are locked in an unholy alliance in order to reinforce British rule and the partition of Ireland. Over the past years they have attempted to sell the big lie to the Irish people and the world that British rule is normal. Next year they intend this process to culminate with a visit to the 26 Counties by the Queen of England. The symbolism of this visit is clear. Its intended message is that Ireland has been finally been either purchased or intimated into accepting the writ of the British Crown in Ireland.

Republican Sinn Féin will oppose this visit. We call on Republicans the length and breadth of Ireland to come out and show to the world that there remains a section of the Irish people who will never be purchased nor intimidated into accepting British rule in any part of Ireland.

Recently British Crown Minister Martin McGuinness claimed he had knowledge of secret talks between the British Government, the 26-County Administration and what were described in the media as “Dissident Republicans”. I can say now that Republican Sinn Féin has not engaged in any such talks. The only basis on which the leaders of Republican Ireland will engage in talks with the British Government will be to secure a full British withdrawal from Ireland. We cannot be any clearer. Mr McGuiness we suggest is playing his part in the machinery of British ‘black propaganda’.

A full British withdrawal from Ireland is the essential first step if a just and lasting settlement of the war between the British Government and the Irish people is to be achieved. Irish Republicans call on all sections of the Irish people to join us in building the New Ireland we set out in our proposals EIRE NUA.

We don’t want to create a 32-County Free State. We want to build the 32-County Democratic Socialist Republic and we call on those who would describe themselves as Unionists to take their rightful place in the historic Irish nation and join us in this task. We believe that EIRE NUA provides the framework within which this can be done.

I leave you the last lines of Bobby Sands’ diary One Day in My Life which sums up the message of heroic sacrifice but also of hope which Sands and his comrades have bequeathed to us: “They have nothing in their entire imperial arsenal to break the spirit of one single Republican Political Prisoner-of-War who refuses to be broken, I thought, and that was very true. They can not or never will break our spirit. I rolled over again freezing and the snow came in the window on top of my blankets. ‘Tiochfaidh ár lá’, I said to myself. ‘Tiochfaidh ár lá’.”

An Phoblacht Abú

Ends.

THE events of recent days and weeks throughout the Six Counties bear
testament to the enduring lesson of Ireland’s history. As long British
political or military occupation remains in any part of Ireland it will be
resisted.

A new risen generation have shown their willingness in areas such as
Ardoyne to go out and take on the forces of British occupation and we
salute them.

The response of the political elites of Stormont, Leinster House and
Westminster is as unchanging as the resistance itself. Not for the first
time another young idealistic and politically aware generation of Irish
people are dismissed as a ‘mob’. To do so is to ignore the reality that
British occupation will always be met with active resistance and the cycle
of Irish history will continue.

Coupled with the acts of resistance on the streets, the ongoing struggle of
the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison declares to the world that a
section of the Irish people have not been intimidated, purchased or
pacified.

The British policy of holding Ireland has taken many forms over the
centuries ranging from blatant coercion to more subtle intrigue and
pacification.

The utterances of the Provisionals contain an example of both. Speaking on
RTÉ Radio 1 on the This Week programme on August 8, Martin McGuinness with
forked tongue repeated an earlier call by Gerry Adams for Republicans to
speak to the Provisionals.

In the same interview McGuinness said that the British government have a
responsibility to “get to grips” with those who are resisting British rule
in the Six Counties. His interview provides an example of the age-old
policy of pacification coupled with increased coercion.

The leadership of Republican Sinn Féin have quite rightly rejected any
notion of ‘talks’ with the Provisionals. The Provisionals are now part of
the machinery of British rule and any ‘talks’ proposed by them would only
have the purpose of undermining the historic struggle for Irish freedom.

Republican Sinn Féin and its leadership will continue its work of advancing
and advocating among the Irish people the clear Republican alternative to
British rule and partition. ÉIRE NUA is a practical working out of the aim
of Theobald Wolfe Tone to unite Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter.

ÉIRE NUA provides the key for breaking out of the shackles of sectarianism
and imperialism which have crippled our nation.

1. REPUBLICAN SINN FÉIN SALUTE REPUBLICAN POWS

IN A statement, the President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton said on
August 12:

“Republican Sinn Féin salutes the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry prison
on securing their right to political status. This victory for the
Republican prisoners was secured as a result of a courageous and
single-minded struggle. A protest which they maintained since Easter
Sunday, April 4.

“By their actions the Republican prisoners delivered a message, which
reverberated, throughout the world that British rule in Ireland will never
be normal or acceptable.

“We would also like to commend the mediators who facilitated this
settlement for the diligence, integrity and commitment shown by them over
the past number of weeks.”

2. POLITICAL STATUS GRANTED TO REPUBLICAN POWS

THE POW Department of Republican Sinn Féin welcomed the announcement on
August 12, 2010 that the protest at Maghaberry jail by the Republican POWs
in Roe House was finally over. The conditions that brought about the
protest got worse as the protest escalated and the men endured a dreadful
few months since they occupied the canteen on Easter Sunday last. This was
the result of many years of campaigning for the restoration of political
status signed away in 1998.

The POWs showed courage and resilience in their stand against the
criminalisation policy of the British government and the petty
vindictiveness of the screws. They endured more than any prisoner should be
expected or asked to endure and they emerged victorious!

The politicians in Stormont were as unhelpful as the British government
they work for. Having signed away political status they went on to
implement British policy with vigour at the expense of the Republican
prisoners. But the prisoners, like James Connolly, believed that Britain
never had any right or will ever have any right in Ireland and so like many
before them had to do, they fought a hard fight to be recognised as
political status.

Republican Sinn Féin would like to thank all those people who worked so
hard on the outside to bring about this resolution. We thank the families,
relatives, friends, comrades and ex-POWS, and supporters who 'pounded the
pavements' over the years as they campaigned for the political status the
men were entitled to. They never lost faith and their hard work is now
rewarded. To the families who endured many years of harassment and
humiliation a special word of praise. Week after week, in hail, rain, snow
and sunshine they visited Maghaberry jail and put up with whatever was
thrown at them: hostility, the drugs dog, refusal of visits etc.

And we thank the facilitators who over the last few weeks put in such an
effort which was eventually so successful. They gave of their time
willingly and we appreciate the amount of effort they put in.

And finally we thank the prisoners themselves for having faith in us to
work with and for them. You have shown the world what you are capable of.
You took on the British establishment, you never gave in, you saw it
through to the end.
Echoing the sentiments expressed by our President Des Dalton WE SALUTE THE
PRISONERS!

3. A NEW RISEN GENERATION RESISTS BRITISH RULE – EDITORIAL, AUGUST SAOIRSE

4. REPUBLICAN SINN FÉIN INTACT (FROM AUGUST SAOIRSE)

THROUGHOUT June and July members of the Officer Board of Republican Sinn
Féin, including the President, Des Dalton, met with members of the
organisation in all four provinces and in England following the departure
of some members (see June SAOIRSE).

This splinter group has set up an organisation which they call ‘RSF – Real
Sinn Féin’ and has embarked an a policy of disinformation aimed at
confusing Republicans who have remained faithful to Republican Sinn Féin
and the Republican Movement in general.

Articles in both the broadsheet and tabloid newspapers have made claims
that the bulk of the Republican Movement is with this splinter group. The
articles in the tabloid papers in particular contained scurrilous attacks
on members of the true Republican Movement. These included threats to our
offices and to SAOIRSE.

Republican Sinn Féin is intact throughout the country. A small number have
left the organisation but in some areas people have returned to the
Movement. At meetings in Munster, Leinster, Connacht, Ulster and London
members of the organisation reaffirmed their allegiance to Republican Sinn
Féin and the aims and objectives of the Republican Movement. We have
received messages of support from supporters in the USA and in Europe.

On July 27 Kevin Devlin, Assistant PRO, Republican Sinn Féin, said:

“Following recent statements and letters from a Limerick-based splinter
group styling itself as “RSF, Real Sinn Féin” which have made their way
into the Irish News (Belfast) unquestioned and unchallenged, we feel
obliged to put the record straight on a few issues raised.

”This group does not speak for, and indeed is not qualified to speak for
any part of the Republican Movement. The bruised egos at the head of this
outfit are former members of Republican Sinn Féin who failed in an attempt
to usurp Sinn Féin and “took the ball home” when they didn’t get their own
way.

”They have made up a name for themselves with the same initials as
Republican Sinn Féin with the clear purpose of creating the maximum amount
of confusion in the people’s mind.

“Republicans reject the spin of these self-serving individuals and their
media friends.”

The following statement was supplied to media sources, including SAOIRSE,
by the Irish Republican Publicity Bureau on August 5:

“We have been asked to release the following statement re the Irish Times,
Belfast Interview:

“The interview given by the latest splinter group to break away from the
Republican Movement to the Irish Times (July 28) is a tissue of falsehood
and fabrication mixed with gross exaggerations.

“It is the culmination of a campaign of untruth that began at the end of
September last when a change in the Presidency of Republican Sinn Féin was
announced to a meeting of An Ard Chomhairle.

“The tabloid press was the vehicle used Sunday after Sunday to sow distrust
and confusion in the ranks. The leadership believes that elements now
associated with the splinter group were responsible for this activity.

“The most serious charge made was that ‘over €20,000’ was misappropriated
by a prominent Republican in Belfast. This matter was enquired into
thoroughly, the sum of money was found to have been far less than was
stated and was in fact accounted for. There was no question of it being put
to personal use. However the subject was used for personal attacks on the
person concerned and is now being raised again.

“It has been made into a case of character assassination and is on a par
with the outrageous charges relating to other matters made from the same
quarter against personnel on the national officer board of Republican Sinn
Féin. These allegations were later withdrawn.

“Such matters could not be dealt with through the mechanism of a Continuity
Army convention and the judgement of the leadership was that for security
reasons such should not be held.

“Nothing was apparently said in the interview about the question of a
‘broad front’ with other organisations. This matter has been one of
contention for some years and has been rejected by the leadership and by
successive Ard-Fheiseanna of Republican Sinn Féin.

“In an interview with the Sunday Times of June 6 a spokesperson for the
splinter group ‘urged the leadership of the Real IRA (RIRA) and of Óglaigh
na h-Éireann (OnH) to unite’ with them.

“The splinter group’s proposal for a merger was turned down by the
principal organisation and nothing more has been heard of it.

“In Limerick a body calling itself ‘Limerick Independent Republican
Organisation (LIRO)’ has emerged, only to adopt the name RSF ‘Real Sinn
Féin’ in order to cause maximum confusion in the public mind. Those were
the people who called for ‘Republican unity’ on Easter Sunday last.

“Talk of a ‘takeover’ and of ‘95%’ of personnel joining the splinter group
is totally ridiculous. Other expressions such as ‘North versus South’ and
‘old versus young’ are rank Provo-speak. We have heard it all before,
especially in 1986.

“The splinter group people should go their own way and cease using the name
of the Republican Movement. They should quit calling at the homes of
faithful Republicans late at night and in numbers.

“They should stop attempting to intimidate sellers of SAOIRSE-Irish Freedom
from carrying out their work. This was particularly the case when the June
issue carried statements on the front page answering calls to hand over our
offices and our newspaper.

“These people are diverting attention from the Republican prisoners in
Maghaberry jail, Co Antrim, now in their ninth week of a ‘dirt strike’ for
political status as an escalation of their protest since Easter.

“Meanwhile the true Republican Movement continues to pursue its historic
aims and calls for increased support at home and abroad.
“(Signed) B Ó Ruairc, Rúnaí.”

5. ARDOYNE MEN REFUSED BAIL 'UNTIL PARADES END'

A BRITISH judge refused bail in Belfast’s High Court to Robert Daniel
Darling (31), Cliftonville Avenue and Emmet Docherty (20), Jamaica Street,
Belfast on August 18 until all contentious Orange parades are over.
Opposing bail solicitor Barry Valentine said that 48 RUC/PSNI members had
been hurt and 78 petrol bombs had been thrown during the protests following
the forcing past the Ardoyne shops of an Orange feeder parade on July 12.
The British colonial police had fired 74 plastic bullets. On being told
that two contentious parades were to take place on August 28 and September
11 he refused bail.

6. GAA CLUB VANDALISED

ST Mary’s Gaelic football club on the Townhill Road in Rasharkin, Co Antrim
was daubed with sectarian graffiti on August 15.

7. GARDAÍ TO GET POWERS TO POLICE OVERSEAS

HIGHLY-trained members of the 26-County Garda elite squad, the Emergency
Response Unit, could be deployed on foreign streets as a result of a change
in the law, according to a report in the Irish Times on August 3. The
legislation is being introduced to bring the 26 Counties into line with the
law in other countries.

The legislative measure, currently being drafted, will allow the ERU to be
dispatched to another European state to help local police tackle a
“terrorist or criminal-related crisis”. It will also give the go-ahead for
the authorities here to request the assistance of a special intervention
unit from another European force if this country is confronted by a similar
crisis.

The measure was initiated in the EU following the 9/11 and Madrid attacks.
It can only be used where a member states’ own emergency-response teams are
unable to cope with a particular crisis and seek help from elsewhere in the
EU.

A member state can seek such specialist assistance where a “criminal or
terrorist offence” poses a serious threat to the security of the country.
The change amending the law has been included in the new Criminal Justice
(Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.
9. SAVE NEWGRANGE SUPPORTS CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION

ON August 11, the Save Newgrange group supported calls by Independent Meath
County Councillors for An Taisce to be “stood down” while an investigation
into their funding takes place.

The call was made by Cllrs Brian Fitzgerald and Jimmy Crudden and was
reported in the Meath Chronicle. The councillors questioned the
appropriateness of corporate donations made to An Taisce by the Indaver
incinerator company of €5,000 and Tesco of €25,000. Indaver is building an
incinerator in Meath, close to Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site.

An Taisce became the first Irish environmental charity to receive
government sponsorship, in 2001. It publicly expressed support in January
for the proposed route of the N2 Slane Bypass, which runs 500m from Brú na
Bóinne World Heritage Site.

Save Newgrange is opposed to the route, and has made complaints to An Bord
Pleanála, UNESCO, and the European Commission. An Bord Pleanála since asked
Meath County Council for additional information on the effects of the route
on the World Heritage Site, which was due to be submitted on July 30.

Vincent Salafia of Save Newgrange said:

“We are very concerned about the corporate donations An Taisce is receiving
from bodies who are regularly seeking planning permission.

“We feel there is a definite conflict of interest with An Taisce taking
money from corporate and government sources.

“An Taisce should be ‘stood down’, as recommended by the councillors,
pending an investigation into their affairs.”

The Save Newgrange and TaraWatch, in co-operation with Matt Schwoebel of
the 2048 Project at University of California, Berkeley, are launching an
online petition drive on Friday, August 20 to mark the beginning of
Heritage Week in Ireland.

Irish Heritage Rights Survey: http://www.kwiksurveys.com/online

They are asking people to complete the Irish Heritage Rights Survey, which
will be sent to the Human Rights Committee in the United Nations, which
monitors the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights.

If you are concerned that Irish heritage is not getting adequately
protected, particularly when it comes to majorly important sites like Brú
na Bóinne and the Hill of Tara, then please fill out the survey and pass it
on to your friends and contacts Vincent Salafia at info@tarawatch.org –
11. HOMELESS TAKE ON ISRAELI FORCES

A BRUISING battle of will is taking place between Israeli security forces
and Palestinians recently made homeless after two Palestinian villages were
razed and hundreds left homeless, according to a report from Ramallah on
August 10, 2010.

During the last few weeks over a thousand heavily armed Israeli riot
police, soldiers and police, at times accompanied by helicopters and
bulldozers, have clashed with the expelled Palestinians and their
supporters as the latter attempt to rebuild the villages.
Al-Araqib, a Bedouin village in Israel's Negev desert, was destroyed in a
pre- dawn raid at the end of July to make way for a Jewish National Fund
forest. The razing of the village was carried out despite pending legal
action on land ownership that Al-Araqib residents have launched in the
local Beer Sheva District Court.

During the destruction hundreds of Palestinians, including at least 200
children, were left homeless. At least 45 homes, chicken co-ops, animal
pens, carob trees and fruit orchards were levelled, and about 800 olive
trees uprooted. A protesting Arab-Israeli member of the Knesset (the
Israeli parliament) was amongst those injured.

The destruction of the village came two days after Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at a government meeting of the "threat" of losing
Jewish majority in the Negev region. Bedouin constitute 25 percent of the
population of the northern Negev, but occupy less than two percent of its
land.

According to a media statement released by Human Rights Watch (HRW),
"Israel has demolished thousands of Negev Bedouin homes since the 1970s and
over 200 since 2009. The Land Administration also began spraying villagers'
crops with herbicides in 2002 as a mechanism to cause evacuation, a
practice deemed illegal by the Israeli Supreme Court in 2007."

HRW says that in the 1950s and 1960s Israel passed laws enabling the
government to lay claim to large areas of the Negev where the Bedouin had
formerly owned or used the land. Planning authorities ignored the existence
of Bedouin villages when they created Israel's first master plan in the
late 1960s.

The Negev Coexistence Forum, a Bedouin rights group, said in a statement
that Al-Araqib existed before the creation of Israel in 1948, and that
residents returned there after being evicted by the state in 1951.

Tens of thousands of Bedouin live in "unrecognised" villages in the south
of Israel. Israel considers them "illegal", and has refused to connect them
to basic services and infrastructure.

However, Israeli authorities granted large tracts of land and public funds
for Israeli Jews to establish ranches in the area, and connected them to
national electric and water grids despite the absence of proper planning
permits, according to Israeli rights group Adalah. The ranches were
legalised a month ago.

At the beginning of August clashes broke out again, and structures were
destroyed when Israeli security forces dispersed Al-Araqib villagers and
their supporters as they tried to rebuild the village.

Meanwhile, across the Green Line, the internationally recognised border
between Israel proper and the occupied Palestinian West Bank, many
Palestinians were recently made homeless. Israeli authorities declared the
decades-old village Farasiya in the northern West Bank a closed military
zone, and razed it.

In the middle of July Israel's Civil Administration, which controls large
swathes of the West Bank, demolished 55 structures, including animal
shelters and agricultural buildings.

On August 7 Farasiya villagers, accompanied by Israeli and international
sympathisers, tried for the third time to rebuild the village after it had
been levelled twice during the last month.

Farasiya falls within Area C of the West Bank, which is under full Israeli
control. Under the 1993 Oslo Accords Area C, which comprises approximately
60 percent of the territory, was meant to be slowly handed over to the
Palestinian Authority (PA). Instead, Israel has been enlarging and
establishing new Israeli settlements and expropriating Palestinian land for
the benefit of Israeli settlers in the area in violation of international
law and UN resolutions. Farasiya village was located near to five of the
illegal settlements.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that
more than a hundred structures in the Jordan Valley have been demolished in
12. TRIAL OF ‘CHILD SOLDIER’ OPENS AT GUANTANAMO

OMAR Khadr was only 15 when he was captured by US forces in 2002 in
Afghanistan. Now, eight years later, the 23-year-old is on trial in
Guantanamo Bay, in the first military commission trial since the beginning
of the Barack Obama administration.

The Pentagon-appointed defence attorney, Lt. Colonel Jon Jackson, has
called the case “the first one against a child soldier in history”.

Khadr, a Canadian citizen, is accused of throwing a hand grenade and
killing a US Special Forces soldier during a US bombardment of an al Qaeda
compound in the eastern Afghan city of Khost.

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Children in Armed
Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy urged the two countries, which are both
parties to the Optional Protocol on Children in Armed Conflict, "to allow
for Omar's reintegration into society through rehabilitation programmes",
adding that to her knowledge "much has been done to prepare such programmes
in Canada".

The statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) states that no one
under the age of 18 should be tried for war crimes. Prosecutors in other
international tribunals have also used their discretion not to prosecute
children in the past.

Khadr's lawyer claims that the accused was interrogated in at the US-run
Bagram air base while still recovering from serious injuries, which
included two gunshot wounds and shrapnel in his face and eye. He was also
threatened with rape in a US prison, one interrogator confirmed, and
promised a return to Canada if he told the interrogators what they wanted
to hear.

During a hearing in May, the interrogators involved claimed they had
treated Khadr very well, but did admit that he was threatened and
interrogated while still severely wounded. These abusive interrogation
methods are in violation of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions and
other humane treatment international standards.

Earlier this month Khadr's lawyer filed a petition with the US Supreme
Court, claiming that commissions are unconstitutional because they offer a
lower standard of justice to foreign citizens, whilst US nationals also get
the protection of a federal court.

”The United Nations continues to insist that children accused of crimes, as
distinct from war crimes, must be tried in accordance with the rules and
procedures which respect and respond to his minority at the time of the
alleged offence”.

Coomaraswamy told Inter Press Service, adding that “Clearly, no military
tribunal, which I am aware of, meets these international standards”.

Anthony Lake, the executive director of the UN children's agency UNICEF,
has also spoken against children under 18 being tried for war crimes. The
US and Canada were amongst the countries that worked to persuade the
Security Council to create and implement norms for the protection of
children in conflict.

It is now their duty, Coomaraswamy commented, “to come to a mutually
acceptable solution on the future of Omar Khadr that would prevent him from
being convicted of a war crime he allegedly committed when he was a child”.

Irlanda'da 4 Nisan 2010'da baslayan hapishane direnisi 12 Agustos'ta zaferle sonuclandi. Direnisin öncülügünü yapan Republican Sinn Fein (Cumhuriyetci Sinn Fein) partisi tutsaklari kutladigi aciklamasinda, yillardir ugruna mücadele edIlen "siyasi hükümlü" sifatinin nihayet kazanildigini Ilan etti.

Maghaberry cezaevinde bulunan CIRA (Irlanda Cumhuretci Ordusu Devamcisi - Continuity Irish Republican Army) tutsaklari, kendilerIne yönelik cirilciplak soyarak arama uygulamalarinin cok siklastigini belirttiler.

Tutsakiri selamliyoruz." dedi.

Bundoran Hunger Strike Commemoration 'not sectarian' - CaseyPremium One of the organisers of next week's Hunger Strike Commemoration in Bundoran has rejected claims that the event is in any way sectarian.
Brendan Casey insisted yesterday: "For people to say that our commemoration would be sectarian is misguided, as many Protestants have always taken part in this event which honours men who died for their country.

"I've never been involved in sectarian politics and anyone who knows me understands that.

"Sectarianism is anti-Republican.

"Republicans principles are not sectarian because all true Republicans include Protestants, Catholic and Dissenter. Some of the founding
fathers of Repubicanism, such as Wolfe Tone, were Presbyterian and we would hope in the future that we can all work together to build on what Wolfe Tone started. If a new Ireland is to emerge, everyone has to work together."

Up to 2,000 people are expected to attend the 30th annual Hunger Strike Commemoration in Bundoran at 3pm on Saturday, August 28.

Mr Casey commented: "This event is now one of the major events in the Republican calendar and we would have noticed significant increases in numbers, particularly over the past few years. We are anticipating numbers to increase this year as more people again align with traditional Republicanism. This Commemoration remembers all Irish Republicans who have died on Hunger Strike".

The parade which is organised by the Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee attracts several fife and drum bands from around the country and abroad, while relatives of Hunger Strikers and families of those presently in prison will be leading the march from Bundoran's East End to the Republican Garden of Remembrance. Main speakers include, President of Republican Sinn Féin, Des Dalton and a recently released prisoner from Maghaberry.

"We consider it to be crucially important that all those who gave their lives in pursuit of Ireland's struggle for freedom are remembered with pride and dignity," Mr Casey explained. " It is vital that we remember also that the cause for which they died remains unattained. Ireland remains partitioned with a British administration in Stormont."
