The 32CSM opposes political policing, at least it says that. But how can you oppose political policing and yet advocate this even as an interim measure? The warning comes in an article in a newsletter associated with the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, calling on republicans to protest at District Policing Partnership meetings and other events associated with the PSNI.

In the article, a spokespers on for the 32CSM argues that if the “normalisation” policy is not disrupted, republicanism will become irrelevant for a generation.

Meanwhile, dissident republicans will no longer stage weekly protests in the city centre following the resolution of the prison dispute in Maghaberry prison.

The white line pickets, organised by the 32 County Sovereignty Committee (32CSM) and the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association (IRPWA), had been held each Saturday afternoon on Shipquay Street throughout July in solidarity with republican prisoners who were staging a dirty protest in Magahberry prison.

Protests had previously been held on a monthly basis at Free Derry Corner but were moved into the city centre and held weekly as tensions inside the prison grew.

They had been due to hold a protest in the city centre at the same time as thousands of Apprentice Boys and their supporters took part in the annual Relief of Derry demonstrations but the protest was called off then the prison dispute was resolved.

The 32CSM have now announced that the protests in support of the prisoners will resume this weekend at their original location of Free Derry Corner.

Saturday’s protest will begin at 2pm at Free Derry Corner.

It has been brought to our attention by residents from the Millview Manor area that the North-West/Dungannon Housing Association, in conjunction with the RUC/PSNI, have organised a family fun-day on Friday 20th August from 2:00pm to 4:00pm in Millview Manor housing estate.

The RUC/PSNI personnel involved in organising this fun-day have been implicated in the passing on of information about former residents of the estate, revealing their new addresses to those involved in the anti-social antics which lead to their relocation. They have also been involved in attempting to recruit residents of the estate to inform on local Republicans.

We are alarmed that the Housing Association feels the need to politicise the event with the involvement of the RUC/PSNI given their track record on human rights abuses within the Nationalist/Republican community.

The PSNI are no different than the RUC- they continue to use plastic bullets, harass Republicans, carryout house raids and use 28 day detention. The fact that this fun-day has been organised for the children of the area beggars belief as the RUC/PSNI have been involved in endless stop and searches on many children within the six counties. We must not forget the many children who lost their lives at the hands of the RUC/PSNI and British establishment due to the excessive use of plastic bullets.
We in the 32CSM are not opposed to the concept of a family fun-day. However we are opposed to the fact that the North-West/Dungannon Housing Association have decided to involve the RUC/PSNI without any consultation with the residents. The first time the residents become aware that their children would be in close proximity with armed members of the British security forces was when they received leaflets from the North-West/Dungannon Housing Association.

We feel it is important that the fun-day goes ahead without the participation of the RUC/PSNI as we believe their motives are nothing more than a cynical attempt to promote British policing in Ireland.

We in the 32CSM also believe it would be more fitting for the Housing Association to put their resources into completing the unfinished work in the estate. There is inadequate street lighting and urgent need of a safe play area within the estate. Although we welcome a family fun-day we also realise that there are 365 days in the year and a 2hr fun-day falls far short of providing a safe environment for the children of the neighbourhood.

On Sunday 22nd August in Glasgow members of the Vol Charles Carrigan and Gaughan/Stagg Cumann of the 32CSM and the IRPWA attended a white line picket in support of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol. This white line picket was called by the Scottish Support for Political Prisoners Group and a good number of Republicans attended in order to highlight to the people of Glasgow the situation of the POWs and the ongoing campaign for restoration of political status. We all welcome the great victory achieved by the POWs in their protest recently and the picket was to maintain the issue of political status in the public eye, something that was disgracefully bargained away by the Provisional Movement as part of the Good Friday Agreement [GFA].

The picket didnt escape the attention of Strathclyde Police who had a heavy presence and did everything in their power to attempt to intimidate and stop us from our democratic right to protest. They failed and the protestors continued the protest for an hour, receiving a warm and supportive response from many people in the Gallowgate area of the city.

This was the first white line picket in Glasgow and after this succesful protest Republican activists are determined to make sure it is the first of many more to come in solidarity with the Irish POWs.

These include a man being beaten to death in his own home, a woman being mugged on the way to work, and another elderly man being robbed by masked men. These types of incidents are unfortunately an ever more regular occurrence and we believe this activity must cease.

We regard the current level of such incidents to be intolerable and the inability of the Gardai to deal with them to be inexcusable. We are calling on any concerned residents to contact the 32CSM in the Sligo region if they feel that they are being ignored or let down by the Gardai. The 32CSM has had considerable success in tackling anti social behaviour in many areas and we find that a unified community is usually more than enough to deter such activities.

The IRPWA welcome the news that the protest in Maghaberry prison has been resolved to the satisfaction of the Republican POW’s. We thank all those involved in facilitating this resolution and we pay particular tribute to the prisoners, their families and all those who supported them over the course of the protest. Victory for the prisoners in Maghaberry

The 32 county sovereignty movement in Sligo would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the men in Roe house in Maghaberry prison on this successful resolution to the ongoing struggle for political status and humane treatment for republican prisoners.
It is important to recognize that it was not the behaviour of the prisoners that initiated the situation in Roe but rather the brutal treatment meted out to them by the Loyalist thugs that make up the POA. It is inconceivable that the ongoing attempts to brutalize and harass the men in Roe are not fully approved of by the higher echelons of the prison service. It is with caution therefore that we greet this latest development, words will not suffice in this case and it is now up to the prison officers to carry through on the pledges made. It is also important to note that this victory was not achieved through the British government or any of their occupational institutions "granting" anything. Rather it was wrested from them through the dedication, hard work and stamina of both the Prisoners and the many groups that offered them support throughout this ordeal. The harassment of the prisoners families must also be acknowledged as a particular grievance that must come to an unequivocal stop. The attempts to criminalize the republican struggle has failed as it historically always has. It would be naďve to suggest that this represents the death knell of that particular policy but republicans at this point can at least take comfort from the fact that another attempt to break the back of the republican resistance through attacks on the prisoners has failed. We send our support to the men in Roe house and have no doubt that the impressive levels of support for their protests will be emulated in the months to come in further protests against the internment of republicans.
